The six National Collaborating Centres (NCCs) for Public Health promote and improve the use of scientific research and other knowledge to strengthen public health practices and policies in Canada. They identify knowledge gaps, foster networks and translate existing knowledge to produce and exchange relevant, accessible and evidence-informed products with practitioners, policy makers and researchers.

2010 Summer Institute
Presentations are now available online
The NCCs held their 5th annual Summer Institute, from June 28 to 30. This year's theme was Making Connections for Public Health practice, policy and research. Over 180 participants gathered in Winnipeg to discuss Knowledge Synthesis, Translation and Exchange and attend presentations offered by the NCCs and also by other renowned speakers, among them Ron Labonté, Jason Scott Roberts and Pat Martens.

Didn't have the chance to attend the Summer Institute? You may now consult the Powerpoint presentations online.
You can even watch some recorded sessions.

Consequences of Bed Bug Infestations on Public Health

The recent increase of bed bug infestations has become a “very nasty problem which causes a lot of morbidity and marginalization,” said Dr. Tom Kosatsky of the NCC for Environmental Health, at the CPHA 2010 pre-conference session held on June 13. Presented by the NCCs, this session was an opportunity to learn more on the social impacts of a bed bug infestation, the bed bug's biological characteristics, as well as challenges facing control and prevention.

Diabetes and Aboriginal Vision Health: an emerging health crisis in Canada

The NCCAH is supporting the Vision Institute of Canada as it raises national awareness about the soaring rates of diabetes-related blindness facing Canada's Aboriginal populations. A unique Aboriginal Vision Health lecture series, held on October 22 and 23 in Markham, Ontario, is part of an ambitious plan to make 2011 Aboriginal Vision Health Awareness Year. The NCCAH also contributed articles to a special edition of the Canadian Journal of Optometry highlighting the links between diabetes and Aboriginal vision health.

Environmental Scan in the area of the determinants of health for public health

The NCCDH has conducted an Environmental Scan in the area of the determinants of health for public health. The scan identified numerous priority activities to consider as we move forward. Our four-member expert reference group offered strategic input through the duration of the scan and were supportive of the scan's recommendations. The final report was presented at a meeting of our National Advisory Committee, in September 2010. The Committee endorsed the results of the scan and the future direction of the NCCDH.

Composition and Role of the 2010-2011 Northern Hemisphere Seasonal Influenza Vaccine in the Post-Pandemic Period

Recently published studies indicate that seroprevalence against pH1N1 in populations in various regions following the 2009 pandemic waves ranges from 20%-50%, hence many people are still susceptible to infection. The situation is compounded by the fact that pH1N1 may continue to disproportionately affect younger age groups. Therefore, vaccination against pH1N1 will continue to play an important and integral role in the public health effort to prevent and control the spread of pH1N1, and to reduce excess morbidity and mortality due to pH1N1 in the post-pandemic period. Moreover, the trivalent vaccine will also provide protection against seasonal influenza A/H3N2 and B viruses that will likely co-circulate with pH1N1 during the winter months in the northern hemisphere.
