The National Collaborating Centres foster and promote networks to facilitate the exchange of knowledge between the public health community, researchers and other actors. They prepare different workshops, conferences and courses that they present at various local, provincial, national and international events. This section lists the latest news about the Centres and the events they are planning or attending, and also includes other news of interest related to the public health sector.

The NCCHPP invites you to join us with speakers Dan Burden and Catherine Berthod at a free one-day preconference workshop at the Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) annual conference, June 11, 2012, in Edmonton.

The workshop will focus on three interventions aiming at creating healthier built environments which appear to enjoy a high level of political acceptability. These interventions are:

• Traffic calming on urban, residential streets;
• Road diets on suburban roads to allocate space for active transport infrastructure;
• Redesign of main commercial streets of small communities also being used as regional transit roads.

This workshop will be bilingual with simultaneous translation (Fr-En, En-Fr).

The 2012 NCCPH Summer Institute will be held in Kelowna, from May 15 to 16, 2012. Don't miss this unique learning and networking opportunity! Each year, this event gathers over 200 participants including public health practitioners, policy makers and researchers from all accross Canada. Many conferences and workshops will be offered, this year's theme is Advancing Health Equity, Building on Experience. The NCCAH is looking for a fulltime Communications Officer who will support NCCAH knowledge translation activities focusing on First Nations, Inuit, and Métis public health through the design, creation and adaptation of a variety of media including web content, other digital and social media, and print publications. The NCCPH Knowledge Translation Graduate Student Awards are being offered again this year to students who are currently enrolled in a graduate program in a discipline relevant to public health or students who have recently graduated (within the past 12 months). The purpose of the awards is to recognize the work of graduate students regarding knowledge translation in public health in Canada. This year's nominations should be submitted no later than April 10, 2012. To learn more, click here.

Québec City will be hosting the 12th International Conference on HIA from August 29 to 31, 2012. The Conference has a general goal to advance HIA practice in light of new knowledge, to prove its relevance, and to stimulate its use in various public and private decision-making contexts. It is intended for all people whose decisions and actions may have an impact on health.  A call for abstracts will be launched at the end of January. The Centres have planned various workshops and presentations during November, including a one day workshop at the JASP 2011 (Journées annuelles de santé publique) in Montréal. Find out about these events and discover the new publications and tools from the Centres in the latest edition of the NCC E-Bulletin.
Last June, the NCCs participated in the Canadian Public Health Association's annual Conference in Montréal. The Centres organized a workshop on Knowledge Translation in Public Health. This workshop consisted of both didactic and interactive sessions regarding knowledge translation (KT) strategies that have been applied by the NCCs and various groups with which they interact.

Three graduate students will receive the NCCPH Knowledge Translation Awards for the excellence of their work in knowledge translation in public health. The awards will be given at the Canadian Public Health Association Annual Conference in Montreal. Click here to find out the winners' names!

Twenty-five years ago, the first international conference on health promotion took place in Ottawa and the Ottawa Charter was launched. This charter has definitely shaped how we view health promotion and it has supported the creation of a multitude of training centres and specialized publications in health promotion. A commemorative gala will take place on June 29, 2011 at the National Art Gallery in Ottawa.

NCCs replace Summer Institute with internal event for 2011
The National Collaborating Centres have decided not to host an open Summer Institute for 2011. Instead, we will focus our resources on holding the first internal NCC Spring Training. This internal event will offer all NCC team members an opportunity to meet and discuss our goals, priorities and projects. By focusing on our own training and team building, we will be better able to serve the public health community in Canada. To read more, click here.

Dr. Margo Greenwood was presented to the House of Commons in the Canadian Parliament on November 23 as a recipient of a National Aboriginal Achievement Award. Dr. Greenwood, Associate Professor at University of Northern British Columbia and Academic Leader of the National Collaborating Centre for Aboriginal Health (NCCAH), is being recognized for her outstanding career achievements in education.

Antibiotic resistance is an issue health practitioners around the world face daily. Numerous health-related organizations have partnered to mark November 18 as the first Canadian Antibiotic Awareness Day in an effort to promote prudent use of antibiotics and fight the threat of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The NCCHPP will hold a day-long workshop entitled Public Health Ethics: A Tool for Deliberation and for the Development of Healthy Public Policies at the 14th JASP (Journées annuelles de santé publique - annual public health days) on November 24, 2010, at the Centre des Congrès de Québec. The workshop will explore the foundations and the theoretical and practical implications of ethical reflection in public health in Quebec. The Impacts of Bed Bugs Infestations on Public Health

The recent increase of beg bugs infestations has become a “very nasty problem which causes a lot of morbidity and marginalization,” said Dr. Tom Kosatsky of the NCC for Environmental Health, at the CPHA 2010 pre-conference session held on June 13th. Presented by the NCCs, this session was an opportunity to learn more on the social impacts of a bed bugs infestation, the bed bugs biological characteristics, as well as challenges facing control and prevention. Small Drinking Water Systems Project Presentation at CPHA 2010

The NCCs hosted a session presenting the latest news and updates on the Small Drinking Water Systems Project on June 15, at the Canadian Public Health Association Conference in Toronto.
